Pick of the Week: Say Hello to My Little Friend

scarface buckle on amazonI always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So trust me when I say that one of the coolest belt buckles I’ve seen so far has got to be the Scarface belt buckle. It features a photo of Pacino centered, Caesar-like, between four laurel leaves with a scroll reading “Money, Power, Respect” beneath. The silver buckle measures a little more than three inches wide and is so well detailed you can see the pinstripes in Pacino’s suit. Make way for the bad guy.

“Man of Style”: Part Two

I’ve been so opinionated lately–see recent posts–I thought I’d shut up and let someone else on the soapbox. Yesterday’s post on “Men of Style” referenced Tiger Woods penchant for rodeo belt buckles and mocked GQ as a bastion of pseudo-style. Well, it’s a new day.

In 2004, GQ’s Style Guy responded to an inquiry re the Pro Golf/Western Belt Buckle connection. But, he didn’t know the reason why the trend had appeared on the fairway…it’s fun to be in the know, isn’t it?

Another Style Guy inquiry, this one circa 2001, asked whether the metal on ones belt buckle should match that of his cufflinks. I say yes–see post on must-have accesories for Men–and, guess what, so did Style Guy!

Let’s be honest, I was looking more for validation than a second opinion. Back on the soapbox, old gal.

Homage to a True American Cowboy

As my Grandpa’s birthday approaches I thought I’d share a few of the many wise words he spoke. He passed at 55, when I was just five years old, but my memory of him is as vivid as if he was sitting next to me now.

He was a true American cowboy. An engineer by trade–working for the “outer space program”, as my Texas-accented Grandma used to say–he held fast to his cowboy roots. He was soft-spoken but firm, gentle but mighty. He’d put on a pair of dusty Levi’s and work on his truck every Saturday morning with a Budweiser on the garage shelf and Buck Owens playing on the radio. When I’d spend weekends with him and my Grandma he’d give me a quarter if I finished my oatmeal before he did: “One for the money, two for the show” was how our race always began. He always let me win.

Anyway, a few of his favorite phrases come to mind whenever I think of him.

On loose-lipped, fast-talkin’: “Speak slowly. Think quickly”.

On being a good listener: “Never miss a chance to shut up and learn”.

On women who wore tight clothes and too much makeup: “She’s rode hard and hung up wet”.

And on western belt buckles: “A good belt buckle will keep your pants up but only careful consideration and plain talk will keep your head on straight”.

Hats off to you, Grandpa.

Boys Don’t Cry, They Yippi Yippi Yi

Just for fun, thought I’d print the lyrics to ‘I Wanna Be A Cowboy’. This was the most popular song on the radio when I was in the Eighth Grade. It was playing when I danced with Joel Riddle at the Green Acres Middle School Christmas Dance. Gosh, he was cute. Anyway, it’s the silent soundtrack humming in my brain every time I put on my vintage western belt buckle. Cowboy hats off to those who remember the melody.

Bones Star Buckles Up

Bones Star and former Buffy Vampire, David Boreanaz, is a fan of western belt buckles. In a recent interview he told Media Blvd Magazine “I’ve got a belt buckle that says “Cocky” on it and a note came down [from the producers] the other day that said, “They’re having problems with your belt buckle.” I said, “Well, they can have problems with my belt buckle, but I’m not taking it off.” In the end, Boreanaz’ crime-solving character was shot wearing the offending accessory: “I refused to take it off, unless they came over and took the damn belt buckle off themselves.” I’m sure there are a few gals (and guys) who wouldn’t mind volunteering for that job. Click here to view a photo of the star sporting a gorgeous silver belt buckle with a scalloped share and raised western filigree metalwork.
