Click it, wrap it, buckle it, cinch it. Whatever form your belt takes this season, tie one on for maximum trend effect. The spring/summer collections from designers like Marc Jacobs, Celine and Ruffian highlighted the waistline with belts and belt buckles made of everything from leather to legos.
The looks ranged from hippie chic to clean classic, proving once again that the right belt can diversify your wardrobe and take a few basics–crisp white blouse and wrap skirt for women, jeans and button-ups for men–in a variety of directions.

Everything’s coming up roses…and tulips and orchids. According to a recent Pittsburgh Tribune article, scarves, dresses, blouses and, of course, belt buckles are all subject to fashions’ current flower frenzy. It may have something to do with the return of Sex and the City–recall Carrie’s wonderfully wacky outfits and huge flower pins–but it may also just be Spring. Six months of black wool trousers, snow boots and an insulated overcoat that makes you look like the Michelin Man would drive even un-girly types to don pink rose petals.
But you don’t have to be Elle Woods to pull off these looks. The buckle at left follows the trend without taking it too far. Etched in plastic and reminiscent of bakelite, the tattoo-like design is simultaneously vintage and rock star. Clip on thin black belt, wrap around waist of pencil skirt, step into 3 inch croc heels and, voila! Up-to-the-minute fashion without having spent a fortune. As one online clothes hound noted, the best way to keep apace with trends is via accessories. And what better accesory than a beautiful belt buckle?

Seriously, what is the deal with golfers and belt buckles? I don’t mind, really. I’ve never understood why western belt buckles have been restricted to the rodeo. Bowlers need something to hold up their pants. So do ping pong players. It’s just odd that golfers, a group famed for its pink polos and khaki pants, beat the others to the athlete/style icon nexus.
And have they! Anthony Kim, recent winner of this year’s first PGA championship, wore a giant belt buckle inscribed with the letters “AK” throughout the event: “Nike hasn’t put my initials on anything yet” he smartly remarked when Tiger Woods recently asked him about it. Others, like Rory Sabbatini, have been seen on the green in skull and crossbones buckles. It’s a mad world.
They’re not the first, of course, to fill the athlete/fashionista role. Remember FloJo? Way back in 1988 she captivated us with her six inch fingernails, perfectly applied lipstick and fist full of Olympic Medals in track and field. Andre Agassi and, later, the Williams sisters, replaced tennis whites with flourescents and zipper-trimmed denim. And who can forget Becks, whose ever-evolving hairstyles and Armani suits have turned soccer into a sport even a few Americans follow.
But Golf? That’s just odd.

South by Southwest, Austin’s annual music festival, gets props for introducing little-known alterna-rock bands to larger audiences. It’s also known for sparking hot trends in fashion. This years festival, held last month, was no exception.
Seen on the scene were skinny jeans and, surprise!!, belt buckles. Gaspard Auge, of goth dance band Justice, sported a retro belt buckle while headlining the Playboy Party at SxSW and Texas’ own Trail of Dead’s members were snapped donning western belt buckles with tight black jeans throughout the festival.

A recent Detroit Free Free Press article touts exotic skin belts and rock star belt buckles as the current “it” items in Menswear. As one interviewee explained, “There’s not a lot for men to do or change when it comes to fashion.” A cool belt buckle provides a solution, mixing easily into a ready-made ensemble and spicing up the standard suit/jeans/tee trifecta that is the typical man’s work week to weekend wardrobe.
Among the best ideas the article put forth was the favorite rock band belt buckle. Specifically, it suggested wearing buckles with the insignias of Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd. I couldn’t agree more, although I’d restrict these to weekend wear only. Pair with casual denim, colorful sneakers and a well-fit tee shirt for day and crisp, dark denim, leather boots and blazer for night.
