Last month designers, debutantes, celebrities and supermodels stomped along Sixth Avenue towards Bryant Park armed with ruffles, plaids, platforms and booties. Thankfully, they brought a few cool belt buckles, too. Check out Ruffian’s Fall 2008 Ready to Wear Collection on Style.com. I’m not a big fan of the schoolgirl gone punk look–makes me think of overly-opinionated pop tarts like Avril Lavigne–but I do love the Goth/heavy metal belt buckles the girls are sporting.

Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister, and President George Bush have a cowboy connection. And, yes, I know this is another Canada-related post. My plan is to cover western fashion on a global level. Next up, boots and spurs in Belarus. Democracy in action, folks. Anyway, on the occasion of George’s 60th birthday, PM Harper ponied up to the White House bearing gifts reflecting the western heritage of both Canada and the U.S.
A CBC news column counts a limited edition Calgary brass belt buckle and a flat-brimmed RCMP Stetson among the tokens proffered. George thanked the Prime Minister by calling him “Steve”, a no-no according to Steve’s Mom.
This got me to thinking: World leaders should go by their college nicknames, as in “Angie, Sark, K Jong and I discussed global warming over beer nuts and a pint at Bullfeathers and I think we’ve reached a resolution.” Of course, they’d have to don Levi’s and western belt buckles before George would consider them allies. Frankly, I think that might make the world a better place.

I consider myself a pretty well-traveled cowgirl. I’ve climbed the Eiffel Tower and swam with the fishes in Cozumel. I’ve even wailed at the Wailing Wall. But I’ve never been to Canada. When I think of our neighbors to the North the only thing that comes to mind is French speaking magicians (don’t ask) and South Park. Hence my surprise when I stumbled upon the above YouTube video on The Calgary Stampede. Canadians are country folk! Every year the entire town plus a few rodeo-loving imports gussies up in their finest cowboy hats and western belt buckles to attend the fete, wherein proud horses and angry bulls are mounted by some of the best roughriders in the world. Check out the video to feel part of the festivities and appreciate the gorgeous gold belt buckle worn by the video’s host. Whadaya’ say everyone? Calgary Stampede 2008? I’m there!
