Going to the Chapel with Panache

I’ve been to more weddings in the last couple years than I can count on two hands. Most of them look pretty much the same–bride in Scarlett O’Hara dress, groom in black tux, enough flowers to decorate the Rose Bowl Parade. So when I stumbled upon photos of a recent Austin, Texas wedding, wherein the groomsmen wore Texas belt buckles, I thought it was a great idea. The buckles reflect the style and culture of the bride and groom without looking over the top and the groomsmen look comfortable in their suits and ties with a touch of what is familiar. Great way to personalize a wedding without looking like they came from a rodeo!

HD BuckleHigh school nerds unite! Former AV team members, FBLA Presidents and anyone teased, taunted and tormented for their smarts and tech know-how rejoice. Fashion is finally on your side. Where football captains and prom queens once mocked your pocket protectors, they will now be googling online electronics stores and searching ebay for the five coolest belt buckles out there…the ones you already knew about. Clap your hands everybody, and everybody clap your hands. Revenge of the Nerds hath arrived.
1. The Scrolling LED Belt Buckle. Say what you want without saying anything at all.
2. The Search Engine Belt Buckle. People are entering some strange queries on google. Your belt buckle exposes them.
3. The NES Belt Buckle. Pretty cool but a bit awkward to actually play with. Check out the photo of the girl on the pay phone, though. She’s savvy enough for a NES belt buckle but doesn’t have a cell phone?
4. The Ajoka Camcorder Belt Buckle. Be on your best behavior if your pal wears one of these, lest your drunken dance at Coyote Ugly ends up on youtube.
5. The Hard Drive Belt Buckle. Doesn’t actually do anything but looks awesome.

Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies End Up on Your Belt Buckle

I like Julia Roberts. I like babies. I, obviously, like belt buckles. Do I like them all together?…not so much.
Two years ago Julia was snapped wearing a belt buckle with a photo of her uniquely-named children, Phinnaeus and Hazel, stamped on it’s base. Perhaps she was having a hard time transitioning from babies “in the belly” so decided to put them “on the belly”.
Funny thing is, she can’t see the photo, whilst wearing it, to appreciate it. Papparazzi and passersby may not mind Julia’s belt buckle but imagine if your average Jane, your neighbor, let’s say–the one who updates little Susie’s Sears photo album every week and insists you take a look after spotting you mowing the lawn–sported a photo belt buckle. Do we all have to think little Susie is as cute as her Mother does? Those photos belong in a scrapbook and the baby belongs in a pram. Leave belt buckles out of it.

guns bucklesSo here’s a twist on the gun/belt buckle connection. Instead of concealing an actual gun, a store in Pine Ridge, Idaho sells belt buckles that reveal them. The stores owner claims they are among their most in demand accessories. They’re fake, at least–some encrusted with diamonds and fur–but since when did it become cool to wear a plastic gun around your waist? In New York, that might get you shot. The po po don’t take kindly to kids who carry what appear to be weapons, whether diamond encrusted or not. Click here for the story and video.

Buckle Up for Fashion Week

ruffian clipLast month designers, debutantes, celebrities and supermodels stomped along Sixth Avenue towards Bryant Park armed with ruffles, plaids, platforms and booties. Thankfully, they brought a few cool belt buckles, too. Check out Ruffian’s Fall 2008 Ready to Wear Collection on Style.com. I’m not a big fan of the schoolgirl gone punk look–makes me think of overly-opinionated pop tarts like Avril Lavigne–but I do love the Goth/heavy metal belt buckles the girls are sporting.
